OUR HISTORY

Since December 9, 2001 Providence has enhanced the Lynchburg community. On Sunday, December 9, 2001 nearly 100 people began the journey of becoming a church. The church was established as Providence Place. Several of the members that joined followed Dr. James E. Coleman, Jr. from the historic Court Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia as a new church plant. The church began to grow and moved to several locations (101 Village Road, Ramada Inn Odds Fellow, Holy Cross School, Central Virginia Community College, and Holiday Inn Select) up to the present location of 400 Oakley Avenue.

A separate CDC was established bearing the name of Providence Ministries International, Incorporated. This was developed from the knowledge of Dr. Coleman who graduated from the Harvard Divinity and John F. Kennedy School of Government Summer Leadership Program in 2001.  The CDC provided a Providence Behavior Modification Program with the full endorsement of the Virginia General Assembly with grant dollars, and local judges to redirect youth and adults to more positive behaviors acceptable for productive citizenship. In addition, in our early history we started a school, day care, before and after school programs, television ministry on WSET and a church basketball league. Moreover, we have converted a storefront building into a multi-dimensional place of worship, witness, and work in the mid-town section of our city.

The church that has a rich Baptist heritage is open to freely serve God’s people as a functional New Testament church seeking to build up the kingdom of God. Our current affiliations are with Churches United for Service, Virginia Baptist State Convention, Baptist General Convention of Virginia, Kingdom Builders Fellowship, One Family One Future, and Global United Fellowship.

On October 5, 2014, the church relaunched bearing a new name Providence Transformation Church International (PTCI). This decision was made to facilitate the church moving to the next level with even greater productivity. The 100 people who now make up PTCI are a vastly different group than those that organized in 2001, this new group is ready to do major 21st century ministry in Lynchburg and beyond!   Numerous people have already been blessed by our ministry as we have adopted institutions like Virginia University of Lynchburg with a campus Bible Study.

Currently the church has 12 licensed ministers (7 of whom are ordained) and engaged in developing our COVID-19 hybrid campus outreach via Zoom, Facebook Live and in person worship. Our television broadcast can be viewed on WSET ABC-13 at 6 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Providence also started in 2017 a Seven Hours with God All Night Prayer Session on the last Friday of each month in the calendar year. Now for forty-nine consecutive sessions from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Providence is in prayer. A nightly 9 p.m. healing prayer session emerged on August 28, 2020 due to the hospitalization of Dr. James Coleman’s father (James Coleman, Sr.). This prayer session has continued to this day for over 160 days. God’s Storehouse Ministry is one of our efforts to help those who are hungry and in need. Providence continues to engage in influencing the cultural pillars of our community, state, nation, and the world as it relates to government, education, family, business, media, entertainment, religion, and technology
